Is the problem Citizens or is it the State Legislature?

By making such statements is the President promoting the circus? Is it a circus? Is the President trying to lead or play politics?

The citizen uprisings in the Middle East continue. If the citizens scream for democracy enough and/or the the government kills a certain amount of citizens, then the US will condemn the actions of the prevailing government even if we have supported that dictatorship for decades. It appears our foreign policy is to react to a specific incident in a way that supports the democratic movement if after all the smoke clears there is a chance for democracy. Should foreign policy be set before the incident? Should we stop supporting dictatorships now like Saudi Arabia or wait until there is an uprising? Is Americans dependence on foreign oil so great that no foreign policy can be developed based on non economic needs? Should foreign policy be based on non economic needs? Should our policy be “Who cares what happens there anyway”?

Last evening the State Legislature held its public forum on redisticting here in Pasco County. With the passage of Amendments 5 and 6 new constitutional provisions are in place. Although these provisions are under legal attack they will probably remain to the most extent. Will the publics input have any outcome on the redistricting or is it just a show? Will the publics input be used in the lawsuit which most certainly will be filed after the vote in January by the legislature on the new boundary lines? Should geographical boundary lines such as county lines be more important than local interest such as being a suburb or rural area? Is there any way to redistrict without politics?

The real estate market is so bad, the only issue is: Are we at the bottom yet? The unfunded liablility of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mac is staggering. The government can do away with these quasi governmental entitities but that would not do away with the unfunded liabilities on up side down mortgages. Many decades ago the government got into the money lending business on the theory of increasing private home ownership. The private market would not lend so the government did so. Should the federal government be in the money lending mortgage business at all? How is this a proper purpose and function of government? If banks lend money for mortgages then why should the government? Was the creation of government backed mortgages the first major step on a national level of government trying to engineer society?

The presidential field of Republican candidates for President is growing by the day. Pollsters are having a field day trying to predict this or that. The unwitten rule so far is to attack the President and not each other. How long before that changes? Better question: will the rhetoric, sound bites and lack of specific stances on issues proceed down the same path? In this primary are Republicans looking for someone who can beat Obama or someone they think will actually address the major issues facing our nation? Will a candidate emerge with substance who speaks in concrete positions or will it be the same old same old? Is the general public ready for something besides sound bites? Can someone who actually states their postion on issues without the rhetoric and in a specific manner be elected or nominated? If this were a Democratic primary with a sitting Republican Presideint would these issues be the same?

By now everyone has read of the Governors vetoes in the budget of certain line items to reduce spending. Many of these items were earmarks for local spending projects. These earmarks were placed there by elected officials for the benefit of their constituents. The Governors postion is that we must cut spending and the elected officials have polite comments. Will there ever be any real debate on whether the spending cuts were for items that are not a proper purpose or function of state government in the first place? Is it true that if a project is killed because there is not money available mean that if there was, the project is a proper purpose and function of government? Once the economy gets better will we fund these projects or should we? Yes each project must be viewed on its own purpose and merits, but overall is anyone even discussing whether government should do all these things at all? For example should a State Govenment be funding a medical clinic for the needy? Is now the right time to discuss these issues or is it just the easy way out to say we cannot afford it?

The first major Presidential Debate will be in Orlando in September run by Fox News in conjunction with a straw ballot poll. Foreign relations will surely be one topic of discussion. This will also be the approximate time the United Nations will be taking up the issue of the recognition of Palestine as a State. The Presidents position that Israel should vacate its territories was quickly rebuked by Israel. How big an issue will support of Israel be in the presidential election? Will this issue be overshadowed by the debt crisis and/or health care? What portion of the general public has even a basic understanding of the situation unfolding in the Middle East? Will there be a mass exodus from the Democratic Party of the Jewish vote?

The Republican field of candidates for the presidency is expanding each day. Some make formal announcements of the establishment of an exploratory committee. I always thought the purpose of an exploratory committee was to determine if a formal announcement would be made? What I am hearing is that many Republicans don’t like the whole bunch. Is this true? Are many voters just sick of the process and the way candidates present themselves? Is it my imagination or does any candidate ever answer the question? Is it my imagination that when a candidate is done speaking they said nothing? Is it my imagination or is every candidate saying that they can fix the deficit and national debt and there will be no pain, no hardship, no disgruntled citizens, no blood, no loss of services, no threat to national defense and two cars in every garage and a chicken in every pot? And the competition for this cadre of candidates is a President, who with a straight face, lambasts Republicans and states he has closed the border with Mexico? Is this my imagination or am I nuts?
